Reviews of our performance of Mendelssohn's - Elijah

Presented by the combined choirs of Birkenhead Choral Society, Formby Choral Society,
and boys from Merchant Taylors' School

Sunday 26th March 2006, Philharmonic Hall, Hope Street, Liverpool

'What a challenge - daunting.
What organisation - amazing.
What a sound - exhilarating.
What a performance - breathtaking.
Merseyside rejoice - the "Year of Culture" has already started!'
Derek and Barbara, Formby

'I write to congratulate you on last night's splendid performance of Elijah;
what a magnificent experience it was.  My wife and I have been regular
concert-goers at the Phil for more than fifty years, and rarely in all those
years have we come away feeling so moved as we did last night .... We shall
long remember this special occasion, and I am sure it will remain in the
minds of the boys for the rest of their lives ... '
Donald, Blundellsands

'I have never in all my life been to anything as wonderful, I was absolutely
enthralled. The singing was magnificent and so was the music.  I hadn't ever
heard any of the music before but I am still on a high and going through it
in my mind and it is over a week later.'

'Sunday's concert was superb.  My wife and I enjoyed every moment and
I thoroughly miss being able to take part in such concerts.'

'It was a superb evening and it was good to hear the Birkenhead Choral
Society, Formby Choral Society and the Merchant Taylor's boys all working

so well together . . . . .I certainly look forward to future similar events.'

Headmaster, Merchant Taylors' School

'...Then, the concert.  It was BRILLIANT!  I can't recall ever hearing the Elijah

before but it was absolutely a stunning performance.'

We all really enjoyed the evening. (from Sally)

'I had the privilege to be at the first combined concert given by FCS with Birkenhead and Merchants, back in 1994.  That Gerontius was something special, the 1996 Verdi was exciting, the 1998 Carmina typically  exuberant, and the Glorias of 2000 a fitting concert for the new Millenium.  The Verdi and Gerontius of 2002 & 2004 respectively probably outshone  those of the previous century - but now 2006 and Elijah .... words escape me to describe last night's performance.  Spectacular, enthralling,  stunning, magnificent, uplifting - all come to mind - but words can't really describe the experience of the evening.  You would certainly be hard pushed to find a better performance anywhere.  The choirs are Amateurs, in the real sense of the word; but this had far more than a professional performance.  It had genuine commitment, enthusiasm, finesse, panache - everything to make Mendelssohn's desire for the dramatic element of the story to come through. I could go on, but must end by sending my sincerest congratulations to all concerned.'

We are pleased and proud to have received emails, letters and telephone calls from a large number of other supporters echoing these sentiments.  Thank you to all who helped, supported, and came to enjoy the concert.
